Our Home On The Mississippi River

We are located at river mile marker 499.7 on the Iowa side of the upper Mississippi River, which is approximately two miles upstream from Le Claire.

Our property is high enough that we have not yet been flooded. Even in 1965, which was the largest flood on record on the Mississippi River, the water level was 12 inches below the deck. The 12" figure was noted on some papers that were found on the property when we purchased it.

We count our blessings that we have never been flooded with water getting into the house since we've lived here.  Although we did get high water (yes it flooded) in '93',  '97' and twice in 2008. We did not sustain any real damage. In '2001 the water level came up to within 16 inches of our deck.  The Flood of '2001 was the second worst flood on record, according the United States Corp Of Engineers.

I have included some pictures of our house, the river and property, also photos of the flood in 2001.

The Flood of 2001 was the worst one we experienced since we've lived here.
After all the cleanup, and some reseeding,  our yard is back.
